HEADS UP! NEW AREA CODE IN SASKATCHEWAN COMING IN 2021.
To meet the growing demand for telecommunications services and numbers, a new area code 474 will be introduced in Saskatchewan on October 2, 2021. The new area code will co-exist in Saskatchewan with area codes 306 and 639.
Introducing a new area code in a region that is already served by another code creates only minor changes:
- Only new phone numbers are affected by the addition.
- Existing phone numbers keep the same area code and are not changed in any way.
- Local calling areas remain the same.
- The 9-1-1 emergency number remains a three-digit number throughout the area.
HEADS UP! 911 FEE CHANGE
Effective January 1, 2021, the Government of New Brunswick 9-1-1 service fee will increase from $0.53 to $0.97 per month.
CDMA NETWORK DISCONTINUED
Heads up Member. As of April 30, 2019, Virgin Plus replaced old CDMA network technology with our latest 4G LTE network technology. What does that mean to you? CDMA phones can no longer send/receive calls (including 911) or texts or use data as these services are no longer available.
We sent a notification to Members in remaining CDMA coverage areas in Manitoba, Ontario, Québec and the Atlantic Provinces with instructions on how to stay connected on the super-vast, super-fast 4G LTE network, which provides coverage to more than 99% of the population. We're always improving and updating our networks to ensure you always stay connected.
For questions about the CDMA discontinuation or to hook up on the 4G LTE network, give us a shout at 1-888-999-2321 or pop by a Virgin Plus store.
HEADS UP! 911 FEE CHANGE
As of November 4th 2019, Virgin Plus will start charging Members residing in Northwest Territories a regulated provincial tax for the funding of the 911 service in this province.

Monthly Tax: |

Northwest Territories |
$1.70 |
Just a heads-up, this is a charge that was created by the government in this province and not by Virgin Plus. We're required to collect the tax and pass it on to these governments just like provincial sales taxes.

SWITCHING TO PAPERLESS BILLING
Attention Member! In an effort to reduce paper billing waste and reduce costs, as of July 2019, we will be begin switching Members to paperless billing, aka eBill. If you currently receive a paper bill, you'll need to take action. Sign up for My Account and be sure we have a valid email address on file. If you already have a My Account profile set up, great, just be sure the email address on file is the email address where you want to receive your eBill notification. This will ensure when you're switched, you'll still get your bill. Don't sweat it, we'll reach out to you 2 months in advance of the switch.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- Change will take effect on the Members 3rd billing cycle after the communication is sent. For example, if you received a communication about this in May, the switch will occur in July.
- Once a Member has been communicated to, a paper bill will still be sent out for the next 2 billing cycles.
- Download the My Account app for billing features right at your fingertips.
- Notifications will be sent to the email address listed on the account.
- To register for online billing, you must be the account holder.
- To see a more detailed version of your bill, you can download a detailed pdf.
- You can easily setup secure one-time or recurring online payments using a credit/debit card.
- If you cancel your account, you can still view your last 18 months of bill activity.

CDMA NETWORK DISCONTINUATION
Heads up Member. As of April 30, 2019, Virgin Plus will be replacing old CDMA network technology with our latest 4G LTE network technology. What does this mean to you? CDMA phones won't be able to send/receive calls (including 911) or texts or use data as these services will no longer be available. We sent communications to Members with older CDMA phones in Manitoba, Ontario, Québec and the Atlantic Provinces with instructions on how stay connected on the super-vast, super-fast 4G LTE network, which provides coverage to more than 99% of the population. We're always improving and updating our networks to ensure you always stay connected. If you still have a Virgin Plus CDMA phone after April 30, you must take action.
Give us a shout at 1-877-567-5016 or visit a Virgin Plus Store for your options.

Hey there! On Aug. 1, 2016, the Quebec provincial 911 fee for emergency services will change to 46¢/month for each number on your account. Just a heads-up, this fee is mandated and collected by the provincial government and isn't a charge made by Virgin Plus. For more info, head to http://www.agence911.org/en/

Heads up! CDMA network shut down in Northwestern Ontario
Being a Member means you get great offers and discounts from the world’s hottest brands, but it also means you get access to a super-fast network.
As of June 30th, we will begin discontinuing our CDMA network service in Northwestern Ontario. As of the Fall 2015, CDMA coverage will not be available in Northwestern Ontario at all.
Data coverage will not be available as of June 30, 2015, however, voice and text messaging will continue to function in most parts of Northwestern Ontario until Fall 2015.
4G network coverage is available in most of Northwestern Ontario on the high speed HSPA+ and LTE networks. Check out our interactive coverage map for a detailed view of our network coverage in these areas.
Heads Up! New coverage will be coming soon to Chapleau, Manitouwadge, Hornepayne and Longlac
If mobile data is your thing, it’s time to switch to our shiny new network. We like to call it the 4G LTE network. The phones are hot too. It’s easy to upgrade to a hot new phone, just head to My Account to get started, or learn more about how to upgrade.
Got questions?
How do I know if my phone is affected?
Just check the inside of your phone for a SIM card. The SIM card slot is normally located underneath the battery. If your phone does not need a SIM card then it’s probably a CDMA phone.
Here's a list of Virgin Plus CDMA phones:

Heads-up! CDMA EVDO Data Speed Changes
As of July 1st, we will be discontinuing our CDMA EVDO network in Sarnia, Windsor , Essex, Kenora, Niagara Falls and Baker Lake. The rest of Canada will be affected by this network change starting August 1st 2015 and impacted Members will fall back to the CDMA 1xRTT network. What's with all the acronyms? All this means is that Members using certain phones in the impacted regions will continue to be able to make phone calls and send text messages, but will experience slower data speeds.
How slow? CDMA EVDO data speeds can reach up to 3.1Mbps. CDMA 1xRTT data speeds reach up to 153 Kbps.
Check out our interactive coverage map for a detailed view of our network coverage in these areas.
If you have a need for speed, it's time to switch to our shiny new network. We like to call it the 4G LTE network. The phones are hot too. It's easy to upgrade to a hot new phone, just head to My Account to get started, or learn more about how to upgrade.

Changes to Mobile TV data
Due to a CRTC ruling, Virgin Plus cannot offer Mobile TV viewing without impact to the data included in your plan. As a result of the ruling, you may notice a change to your bill with the change to Mobile TV. As of April 29, 2015 data used for watching Mobile TV on our mobile network will be charged using your standard rates (from data included in your plan, add-on or at pay-per-use data rates). 5 hours of Wi-Fi Mobile TV viewing per month is included (additional Wi-Fi viewing is $3/hour). To see the CRTC ruling visit http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2015/2015-26.htm
IS-95 Circuit Switched Data
IS-95 is an older technology used for data activities like tone-based fax, modems or connections that require a prefix (ex. #777). We're updating our service with faster HSPA+/LTE technologies, and as a result, starting May 4th, 2015, IS-95 data service will no longer be available.
For mobile phones, this change will not impact your voice calling or text messaging services, but you'll no longer have access to the mobile browser service on IS-95. If you'd like to access the internet from your phone, we can hook you up with a shiny new one that works on the HSPA+/LTE networks.

Sirius Satellite Radio
As of November 10, 2014 this service will no longer be available through Virgin Plus and you will no longer be charged. If you love satellite radio on your phone, check out the app store for some listening options. Lots of love.
Heads-up! CDMA EVDO data speed changes in Western Canada.
As of October 1st, we will be discontinuing our CDMA EVDO network in Western Canada, and impacted Members will fall back to the CDMA 1xRTT network. What's with all the acronyms? All this means is that Members using certain phones in the impacted regions (British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba) will continue to be able to make phone calls and send text messages, but will experience slower data speeds.
Got questions?
How do know if my phone is effected?
Just check the inside of your phone for a SIM card. The SIM card slot is normally located underneath the battery. If your phone does not need a SIM card then it's probably a CDMA phone.
Here's a list of Virgin Plus CDMA phones:
- LG 700 Bliss
- LG 570 Muziq
- LG 265 Rumour 2
- Motorola KRZR K1m
- Motorola RAZR2 V9m

Updates to One-Time Charges
A few of our services have a one-time charge, and some of those are changing as of July 22, 2014. If you'd like to do any of the following, the fee will change from $25 to $35:
- Change your mobile number
- Resume a cancelled service
- Restore a suspended service (if suspended for non-payment)
- Change the name on the bill or transfer ownership
Changes to the Monthly Cost of Select Silver and Gold Plans.
Virgin Plus offers Members super-hot smartphones, ridiculously fast LTE speeds and plans with loads of extras built right in. To maintain and improve the service we provide starting April 2014, the monthly recurring charge for select Silver and Gold plans is going up by $3. Plan features will stay the same as before
Heads-up! CDMA EVDO data speed changes in Western Canada.
As of March 31st, our roaming partner will be shutting down their CDMA EVDO data network in Western Canada, and impacted Members will fall back to the 1xRTT CDMA network data. What's with all the acronyms? All this means is that Members using certain phones in the impacted regions (British Columbia and rural areas of Alberta) will continue to be able to make phone calls and send text messages, but will experience slower data speeds.
How slow? EVDO data speeds can reach up to 3.1Mbps. 1XRTT data speeds reach up to 153 Kbps.

As of your August bill date we're making a few changes to the rates for domestic pay per use data. If you're on a plan that includes data, this change won't affect you.
Heads-up! You won't be able to send picture and video messages on select older phones.
As of December 31st, the following CDMA phones will no longer be able to send picture and video messages but you will still be able to receive picture and video messages. If you try to send either a picture or video message from your phone, you will receive the following error:
Message: Error C26. Please try again.

What is picture or video messaging?
Picture and video messaging, or Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), lets you take a pic or video with your phone and send it to another mobile phone or email address.
Receiving picture and video messages
Impacted CDMA phones will still continue to receive both picture and video messages from other users. However, you won’t be able to forward them to someone.
Would I still be charged for picture and video messages?
No, you won’t be charged for failed or unsent picture and video messages.
What if I’m subscribed to an unlimited messaging bundle or a plan that includes picture and video messaging?
Members with unlimited messaging bundles on an impacted CDMA phone will still be able to send and receive text messages from their phone. However, impacted phones won’t send picture or video messages.
To modify or cancel your plan or add-on feature due to this change please contact Virgin Plus.
Bug Fix - Voicemail extended absence
Hey Members! If you ever use the "Extended Absence" setting in your voicemail, you'll be happy to know that we fixed a bug. Now if you're on a CDMA phone, the system will block callers from leaving a voicemail message any time you've turned on "Extended Absence", just as it's supposed to. As soon as you want to start getting voicemails again, just turn off "Extended Absence".
Correction To Domestic BlackBerry Email and/or Social Features
Oh no, 50 MB of U.S. data roaming was incorrectly added to a number of domestic BlackBerry Email and/or Social features by mistake. Sorry!
As of November 9, 2013, we'll have fixed the issue and the 50 MB of U.S. data roaming will be removed from your account.
All other domestic data features that you're currently signed up for will remain unchanged.

Problem calling 911 with 3rd party VoIP apps on Android phones.
We want to give you a heads-up about an issue affecting Members using VoIP-based apps like Viber and Skype on Android phones. If you use one of these apps to make call then you might not be able to call 911 in an emergency.
The issue isn't specific to Virgin Plus and could affect customers with any mobile phone company. We've talked with Google and they're currently working with the app developers to make sure the issue gets fixed.
In the meantime, we strongly recommend that Members DO NOT use VoIP apps from Google Play as their default dialer until the issue is resolved.
To make sure you're not using VoIP apps from Google Play as your default dialer and make sure that 911 calls can go through we strongly recommend Members do the following:
- Select Settings (or System Settings) on your phone
- Scroll down to Applications (may be listed as Apps or Application Manager)
- Select the phone dialer application that was set as the default for dialing calls (e.g. Skype or Viber)
- Scroll down to the Launch by default section and click on the Clear defaults button

Virgin Plus Presents Stampede Concert Series Update
Heads Up! As a result of the recent flooding in Calgary our partners at the Calgary Stampede and Scotiabank Saddledome have had to cancel the upcoming Virgin Plus Presents Stampede Concert Series.
Press Release from the Calgary Stampede - Tuesday July 2, 2013:
We regret to inform fans that the four Stampede concerts scheduled in the Saddledome cannot proceed as scheduled due to the damages the facility suffered during the recent flooding. The concerts that were scheduled are:
Carly Rae Jepsen - Wednesday, July 10
Tim McGraw - Thursday, July 11
Dixie Chicks - Friday July 12
KISS - Saturday, July 13
We understand that this news is disappointing to fans and we're disappointed also - we wanted to present our guests and fans with an awesome concert experience.
It became evident yesterday to both the Stampede and the Flames that the services necessary for a proper concert experience for fans and for the artists just weren't available given the current status and limitations of the building.
Construction trades have been working very hard on a number of fronts simultaneously including addressing issues related to electrical power, potable water, air conditioning, air quality, and personal safety. Ultimately, due to the flood, it just isn't feasible to go ahead on July 10.
Given the size of the four shows, and that they are all intended for indoor set-ups with tailored effects and lighting, there was no feasible alternative to host any one of the shows at another Calgary venue during Stampede.
Ticket holders should hold on to their tickets. All ticket holders will still receive admission to Stampede on the day of their concert by showing their concert tickets. We are hoping to reschedule these shows at a later date and we'll know more about potential rescheduling opportunities after Stampede.
Ticketholders should continue to check Calgary Stampede Concerts site and Ticketmaster's website for rescheduling updates and/or refund information.
Why can't I watch HBO on my phone anymore?
We're sorry about this, but as of June 27, 2013 the HBO add-on won't be available anymore. You'll still be able to watch over 25 live channels on the go like CTV, CTV Two, TSN, TSN2 and tons more. You don't need to do anything - you won't be charged for HBO after this day and your plan won't be affected in any way.
Heads-up! We'll add a credit to your account to cover the cost of HBO from June 27 to your bill date. You'll see it on your next two bills, depending on when your bill date is.
CHANGES TO PAY PER USE RATES
Heads-up! The Pay Per Use rate for calls made while Members are roaming in the United States has changed to a new flat rate of $1.45/min! The new flat rate was suppose to start on April 1, but was delayed because of techie issues. Some of you might see incorrect or higher charges on your bill for international calls made while roaming in the US. Not to worry though! Members who were charged the previous voice roaming rates from April 1 – April 15 at a rate higher than $1.45/min will be automatically credited so that you're charged the new, lower rate of $1.45/min. We'll send you a text when the credit has been added to your account.
CHANGES TO PAY PER USE RATES
Heads-up! On April 1, 2013, the charge for Pay-Per-Use texts sent while you're outside of Canada will change to 75¢/text. The charge for Pay-Per-Use calls sent while you're in the US will change to $1.45/minute has been delayed until further notice.
Changes to the "Smartphone Activation - Flyaway To Miami" Contest
Heads-up! Because of the cancellation of the "Virgin Plus Presents: The Born This Way Ball Tour starring Lady Gaga" we'll be awarding an alternate prize.

Hey there! On Mar. 1, 2013, the Prince Edward Island provincial 911 fee for emergency services will change to 70¢/month for each number on your account. PAY PER USE DATA UPDATE
Hey there! Starting September 12, 2012, your Pay Per Use Data rates will be changing from $30.72/MB to our new Pay Per Use Data rate. Our great new rates will automatically adjust every month based on your data usage so you always get the very best rate. Nifty, right?
Changes to Data Bundle Usage
Heads-up! This update is only for members who received a June Bill Message that due to system error, their data use and overage charges may have been lower than they should been on past bills.
Changes To Text Message Charges
Hey there! We're making changes to text rates for Choice Plans. If you text a lot and don't have unlimited text set up on your account, you can save cash by hooking it up. Don't forget, incoming texts are still no charge!
- Pay-per-use and out-of-bundle from Canada/U.S/ sent texts are increasing by 5¢ to 20¢/message.
- Pay-per-use and out-of-bundle sent texts to Mobile Apps (like Facebook and Twitter) will be charged at 20¢/message.

This change is part of an upgrade to our Auto Top Up Payment system that improves the speed of your Auto Top Ups – good news! No changes are required to your account settings – we've got you covered.
Canada Post Strike
If you’re set up to get a paper bill mailed to you, it might not be delivered because of the Canada Post strike before your account is due. Just a heads-up that you’re still responsible to pay your bill on time no matter what, but don’t sweat it – we’ve got you covered.
- To see your bill online, just log in to My Account at virginplus.ca/lounge.
- You can see all the details about other ways to pay your bill at virginplus.ca/waystopay.
- Plus, you can save a couple trees and go totally digital with e-Bill by logging in to My Account at virginplus.ca/lounge and clicking on “View my bill.”
SMS: WE MADE A SMALL PRICING CHANGE TO YOUR BILL, BUT DON'T WORRY YOU STILL PAY THE SAME.
Starting on March 24th, 2011 you might see that, due to a system error, the rate plan listed on your bill has gone up by $5. Don't worry, though, we've added a $5 discount to your account to put everything back to normal. Heads-up! The $5 discount is only for your current plan. If you switch plans you'll pay the most current price.
PAYING FOR TEXT JUST GOT EASIER!
We're matching up text add-on anniversary dates with monthly anniversary dates as of Sept 12, 2010.

If you don't use your phone's web browsing features or have already hooked up to one of our Data Plans or Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing Add-ons, then this pricing change won't affect you.
If you're going to be surfing the web, then this is a great time to hook up an Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing Add-on on Prepaid so that these pricing changes won't affect you. You've still got time to hook one up before the price changes on August 20.

Important Info About The myVIP Rewards Program
Back in December we advised our post paid members that the myVIP Rewards™ program was ending and that we planned on creating a new reward program to launch in 2010.
We've received feedback from our Members on how they'd like to be rewarded and how we can make it even more awesome to be a Virgin Plus Member. Based on their ideas and feedback, we've decided to focus on all of our on-going, year-round benefits in the Members Lounge and to not continue with a rewards program for now. The Lounge hooks you up with stuff like free tones, hot discounts to big time events like NXNE, and early access to tickets for the hottest shows like Lady Gaga.
We've taken the remaining VIP Rewards points for all eligible members and switched them into an awesome bonus. We'll be sending an email to all eligible members to advise them of the reward they will be eligible for in exchange for their points, so please make sure to check your inbox for a message from us.
Heads-up! You've got until June 20, 2010, to give us a call to get your bonus hooked up. After that, you won't be able to get your bonus anymore. Give us a shout soon at 1.888.861.1173 so you don't miss out on the action.
Don't forget that we've got tons of exclusive offers, ticket deals, and other hook ups all the time in the Virgin Plus Members Lounge.
Thanks again and enjoy your gift card!
Lots of Love,
Virgin Plus
CHANGES TO THE DEFAULT RATE IF YOU FALL OFF YOUR PREPAID MONTHLY PLAN
Starting on June 7, 2010, if you're on the $40, $30, or $20 (Evenings & Weekends) Prepaid Monthly Plan and don't have enough funds in your account on your monthly anniversary date to pay for your plan, we'll put you on the 35¢/minute plan instead of the $1/day Evenings and Weekends plan.
Also, the 30-day switchback is going unlimited. That means that if we move you to the 35¢/minute plan, all you need to do is top up with enough funds to cover your plan charges and we'll switch you back to your chosen plan no matter how long it's been since you fell off it. It's also a great idea to hook up preauthorized payments to make sure that your account is always topped up before your monthly anniversary date.
911 Provincial Recovery Tax in Saskatchewan
As of May 20, 2010, the regulated monthly provincial fee for the funding of the 911 service for Virgin Plus Members in Saskatchewan will change from 38¢ to 62¢.
Just a heads-up, this change has been made by the Government of Saskatchewan and not by Virgin Plus. We're required to collect the fee and pass it on to the Government of Saskatchewan.
Long Distance and Local Calling Price Changes
Starting April 15, 2010, long distance charges on out-of-plan calls to Canada or the U.S. are changing from 30¢/minute to 35¢/minute in addition to your local by-the-minute rate. If you're already hooked up to one of our Unlimited Long Distance Add-ons, then this pricing change won't affect you. Also the local by-the-minute rate for out-of-plan calls will be changing from 30¢/minute to 35¢/minute. Please note that these changes will only impact Members who signed up before February 2, 2009. Anyone who joined after this date would already be paying these rates for out-of-plan local and long distance calls.
Web Browsing and International Texting Price Changes
Also on April 15, 2010, the charges for pay-per-use web browsing are changing from 5¢/page viewed to 5¢/kb (Kilobyte) of data. If you're already hooked up to one of our Data Plans or Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing Add-ons, then this pricing change won't affect you. Also, the price to send an international text is changing from 20¢ to 25¢ for each message sent. As always, receiving a text (from anywhere) is free.
If you're going to be making long distance calls or surfing the web, then this is a great time to hook up an Unlimited Long Distance or Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing Add-on so that these pricing changes won't affect you. Click here to check out all our different Add-ons. You've still got time to hook one up before April 15.
Prepaid Pricing Change
As of March 3, 2010, if you are on a $10 or $20 Prepaid Monthly plan and you fail to top up enough to cover your monthly fee by your monthly anniversary date, then your local calling rate will change from 30¢/minute to 35¢/minute until you get back onto your plan.
As long as you stay on your chosen plan, you won't be affected by this price change. It's also a great idea to hook up preauthorized payments to make sure that your account is always topped up before your monthly anniversary date.
Enhanced 911 Services
Enhanced 911 service will be available in the Virgin Plus coverage area as of February 2010. In case of an emergency, 911 operators will be able to locate you more accurately with your mobile phone. To get more info, head to virginplus.ca/e911
911 Provincial Recovery Tax
As of January 29, 2010, Virgin Plus will start charging members residing in Saskatchewan, Québec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island a regulated provincial tax for the funding of the 911 service in these provinces.
The amount of the provincial 911 tax varies depending on which province you reside in, as outlined in the table below.
Province | Monthly Tax: |
---|---|
Saskatchewan | $0.62 |
Nova Scotia | $0.43 |
New Brunswick | $0.53 |
Prince Edward Island | $0.50 |
Quebec | $0.40 |
Just a heads-up, this is a charge that was created by the governments in these provinces and not by Virgin Plus. We're required to collect the tax and pass it on to these governments just like provincial sales taxes.

Drivers can use a mobile phone with an earpiece, headset, Bluetooth™ accessory, or voice dial. Learn More…
Service Update – Pricing Changes
Starting on November 3rd, 2009, the Virgin to Virgin text rate will change to 15¢ from 5¢ for each outgoing text. We are also increasing the price of calls to Directory Assistance from $1.25 to $2.00/call.
Pricing Change To Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing
On October 19, 2009, the price of Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing will change from $7/month to $10/month. If you are already hooked up with Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing then you can keep using it at the current $7 monthly rate. Just a heads-up that if you ever miss a payment or remove the subscription, you can hook it back up for the new $10 monthly rate.
Pricing Change to Virgin Plus Email and Windows Live Messenger Subscriptions
On September 20, 2009, the price of Virgin Plus email and Windows Live Messenger subscriptions will change from $3/month to $5/month each. The good news is you will no longer need Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing to be hooked up to either of these services.
If you already have a subscription to Virgin Plus email or Windows Live Messenger, then you can keep using it at the current $3 monthly rate. Just a heads-up that if you ever miss a payment or remove Virgin Plus email or Windows Live Messenger, you can hook it back up for the new $5 monthly rate.
So, if you currently have Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing hooked up only so that you can access either of these subscriptions, and you don't really use it, then you can now access either of these subscriptions without Unlimited Mobile Web Browsing for only $5/month.
Service Update for Prepaid Members
Starting on July 31st, 2009, the current $10/month Unlimited Text add-on will be changed from unlimited texts, to 2500 outgoing text messages (all incoming are free). The Unlimited Text add-on will now be available for $15/month. If you're currently on the $10 unlimited text add-on, the price will not change. If you ever remove it or fall off, you'll be able to add Unlimited Texts back to your account at the new $15 monthly rate.
